It is one of several locomotives that operate on the line and is known for its distinctive appearance and historical significance.

The Green Goddess is the nickname for the locomotive No. 1 of the RH&DR, officially named "Green Goddess – Samson." It is a 4-8-2 steam locomotive built by the Greenly's Model Steam Locomotive Works in 1925. It is one of the original locomotives of the railway and is still in operation today, providing steam-hauled passenger services. The locomotive is painted in a striking green livery, which led to its nickname, "Green Goddess." It has become an iconic symbol of the Romney, Hythe, and Dymchurch Railway and is beloved by both railway enthusiasts and visitors to the area.

Dr. Syn is one of the railway's two Canadian Pacific-style locomotives   built in 1931 by the Yorkshire Engine Co., the other being Winston Churchill and has an identical history of design and build.

It was ordered by Count Louis Zborowski at the same time as the locomotive "Green Goddess" and was stored with her at New Romney until the construction of the line began. Northern Chief was used during the construction of the line and had the honor of hauling the first official train during the visit of the Duke of York on August 5, 1926. Initially, her history closely resembled that of No. 1 locomotive. However, in 1936, Northern Chief appeared with a tapered boiler lagging that was more pronounced than what was specified in Henry Greenly's original design. During World War II, Northern Chief performed some work but was in poor condition by 1946. To keep her operational during the first post-war season, she had to be fitted with No. 3 locomotive's boiler. After an accident at Dymchurch, she received her own re-tubed boiler. The 140 C 38  is part of the batch of 70 machines ordered by the Ministry of the Armed Forces.   The 140 C 38  is the result of a series of 340 locomotives built between 1913 and 1920. These locomotives originated from the state railway network where the first 70 locomotives built in France were put into service in 1913. On the other hand, the French army, having retained this type of locomotive for the traction of heavy artillery pieces on railways (ALVF) ordered 70 copies, which were built in Great Britain and delivered in 1916 and 1919.
