Northern Chief locomotive was built in 1925 by Davey Paxman & Co. Ltd. and has been an iconic part of the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway's fleet. It is one of several locomotives that operate on the line and is known for its distinctive appearance and historical significance.

However, in 1936, Northern Chief appeared with a tapered boiler lagging that was more pronounced than what was specified in Henry Greenly's original design. During World War II, Northern Chief performed some work but was in poor condition by 1946. To keep her operational during the first post-war season, she had to be fitted with No. 3 locomotive's boiler. After an accident at Dymchurch, she received her own re-tubed boiler.
